A reference photo communicates the idea, but it does not define a measured colour or sheen. Agree the finish scope before production so the quotation, the result, and the acceptance criteria all match.

    What HLC, Lab, and ΔE00 mean
    HLC

    A readable colour address: hue family, measured lightness, and chroma or colour intensity.

    Lab

    Three measured coordinates: L* is light to dark, a* runs green to red, and b* runs blue to yellow. This tool calculates D50 Lab values.

    ΔE00

    A perceptual colour-difference score. Lower is closer; zero means the same measured Lab colour. Screens, paint, texture, and lighting can still change what you see.

    Color references need a standard

    A photo or screen can shift with lighting, camera, and display settings. Provide a Pantone or RAL code, or a physical swatch, when an exact match matters. Otherwise we use the closest available color and record that limitation.

    Surface preparation affects the result

    Layer lines, support marks, seams, and print texture may need sanding, filler, heat welding, primer, or other preparation before paint. The selected level of preparation changes cost, lead time, and visible detail.

    Raw print, matte, or standard gloss

    The raw print shows the original layer texture; a matte clear coat diffuses reflections; standard clear coat is shiny and produces stronger reflections. Specify the required finish before painting begins. Changing the sheen later can require re-preparation and repainting, which is an additional change order.

    When a part is too large for one print

    We can divide a large model into smaller sections, then join and refinish it as one assembly. Before printing, we review split lines, alignment keys, fasteners, visible surfaces, final dimensions, and the loads around the joint.

    Depending on the material and use, joining may use adhesive, heat welding, epoxy, automotive putty, or wood filler. We can sand, prime, paint, and clear-coat the assembled part when that scope is included in the quote.

    Seams may remain visible, and the joining method affects strength, tolerance, price, and lead time. Tell us which surfaces must look seamless and how the finished part will be used.

    Assembly and surface finishing are quoted as a defined production step, not an assumption after printing.

    Make the finish and assembly expectations explicit

    The more complete the brief is before production, the more accurately we can price the work and avoid avoidable change orders.

    Color & sheen

    State the Pantone or RAL code, physical swatch, paint system, and whether the clear coat should be matte, satin, or gloss. A single image alone cannot guarantee an exact match.

    Split & assembly

    Tell us which parts may be split, how they will be aligned, which seams are visible, and whether joining, filler, sanding, heat welding, primer, or paint is required.

    Use & acceptance

    Share the final dimensions, handling or load, environment, quantity, reference photos, and acceptance sample. We will use these details to define the finish scope and quote.

    Finishing and colour questions

    Can you match a paint color from one reference image?

    A photo or screen is affected by lighting and display settings. Provide a Pantone or RAL code, or a physical swatch, when an exact match matters. Without one, we use the closest available paint and the result may differ from the image.

    Can I choose matte, satin, or gloss clear coat?

    Yes. Confirm the sheen before painting begins. Standard clear coat is gloss unless another option is agreed. Changing to matte or satin later can require extra preparation, repainting, price, and lead time.

    Can you split and assemble a part that is too large to print?

    Yes. We can quote split planning, joining, filler, sanding, primer, paint, and clear coat together. Tell us which seams are visible and what final dimensions and loads the assembly must meet.

    Will the seam be invisible after assembly?

    We can reduce a seam with joining, automotive putty or wood filler, sanding, and paint, but visibility depends on geometry, lighting, and acceptance requirements. We will identify the expected finish in the quote.

    Can I change the finish after painting begins?

    You can request a change, but a different color, sheen, or clear-coat type after approval may require additional materials, labor, and schedule. We will confirm the change order before proceeding.

    What should I confirm before production?

    Confirm the color standard, sheen, visible surfaces, split and joining plan, final dimensions, quantity, use environment, and acceptance reference before production starts.
